About Jenna Kellen

I am Kellen.

I believe in acceptance, body positivity, and death positivity. I am a student of mortuary science at Miami-Dade, and a former professional art model.
{Glossary of Terms}
Body positivity: Loving your body as a vessel, the vehicle that carries you through your adventures in this world, and recognizing the beauty of that gift. Focusing on that truth rather than appearances, and seeing the profound miraculous beauty in every body no matter what shape or size.
Death positivity: Actively working on accepting one's mortality and using that knowledge to enhance the quality of life through gratitude and appreciation. Recognizing that death is sad, but it is not bad or evil, just part of life.
Mortuary science: The study of all things death-care related. Including, but not limited to: embalming, the psychology of grieving, the history of death rituals in different cultures, microbiology, anatomy, funeral law, and reconstructive art.
Art model: Professional poser, usually nude, usually for artwork made to be shown in galleries or sold to private collectors. Think abstract and weird more than runway and bikinis.

Stuff I Do For Work
I worked at a craft store briefly when I was a teenager.
In high-school, I taught horsemanship and horseback riding lessons to children and adults. At one of my horse jobs, I lived in a makeshift apartment in the loft of a barn.
I've sold some of my artwork here and there, mostly jewelry and prints of my paintings and drawings. I still do sell my art from time to time, but I've never made enough from that to call it a job.
As a young adult, I taught pole dancing lessons in South Florida and had a home studio in the main room of my apartment.
I started modeling full time in June 2012, and traveled the United States in my little hybrid car to make art with tons of awesome artists. I've been published in international magazines, shown in gallery shows, made into sculptures, featured on book covers, and other cool things.
Currently, I am attending mortuary science school in Miami. After I graduate, I will be working in the funeral care industry, advocating for natural burials and alternative funerals.

Other Stuff I Do
I draw and paint, usually portraits or the female figure.
I am fascinated by entomology and have taught myself out of books and from videos how to pin and preserve insects. My favorites are Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). I have a small collection, and I enjoy turning my specimens into art. I also dabble in osteology (bone stuff).
I love to read, and have a small rare/antique books collection. My favorites are the creepy classics like Poe, Baudelaire, and DeMaupassant.
Nature is my church, I am a proud dirt-worshipping Pagan. Hikes and camping trips are my favorite ways to reconnect with myself.

Likes & Dislikes
I like the ocean, shiny things, lucid dreaming, neutral colors, weird music, the number 11, intelligent people, rainy days, piercings, swords knives and guns, abandoned places, horses, people with interesting stories, bonfires, the woods, grand pianos, free spirits, wearing no shoes, singing, incense, writing, candles, and philosophy.
I do not like suburbs, fake sweeteners, most local bands, whole wheat noodles, bad speakers played too loud, great speakers played not loud enough, and the fact that women (usually) can't take off their shirts in public.

Sensory processing disorder, which is an autism spectrum disorder that causes me to feel everything very differently than the average human. Synesthesia, which means my senses sometimes get all mixed up with one another. Major depression, which means I feel real blue sometimes. And generalized anxiety disorder, which means that every once in a while I feel like I'm gonna die for no real reason at all. I like to share about this stuff to encourage others.

I want to help bring our American culture back to a healthy relationship with death and dying. I hope to make home funeral services more accessible and affordable, so people can take a more active role in caring for their deceased loved ones. I want to learn as much as I can so I can answer peoples' questions and remind them that being curious about death is normal, and wanting to talk about it isn't weird or creepy.

I sing to myself when I drive. Art that touches me makes me cry like a little baby on a regular basis. I have legitimately tried to rap battle someone I was mad at once. I'm one of those people who is annoyed by incorrect grammar. I hate hard, refrigerated butter.

"...For even as love crowns you, so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth, so is he for your pruning... But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor , Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears." -Kahlil Gibran
